Sergeant Hewe McNelly Visits Celina CBI Classes

Sergeant Hewe McNelly, Assistant Special Response Team Commander for the Ohio Department of Corrections, spoke to the Celina CBI class.

The day to day operations of a corrections officer were discussed and many questions were asked. Thanks to Sergeant McNelly for a very interesting and educational presentation.

Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) speaks to Tri Star CBI students

On November 10, Jane Meir, John Rethman, and Joel Etgen, employees of ODOT, spoke to the Tri Star CBI students about the many opportunities that ODOT offers.

Reynolds & Reynolds recruiters visit Celina CBI class

"We need high-quality, dependable workers!” That’s the message that Celina Tri Star CBI students heard loud and clear from the most recent guests to the CBI classroom. That need is what prompted Reynolds & Reynolds Personnel Director Dennis Hirt, two local Reynolds managers, and two additional corporate recruiters from Dayton to visit the class on Thursday. They described the wide range of opportunities for local workers that abound at the Reynolds & Reynolds plant in Celina.

Students listened intently as Dennis Hirt, Marie Weitzel, and Julie Roth described career paths and opportunities, employee benefits, and the increased demand for good workers. Like so many local companies, Reynolds & Reynolds is finding that qualified, hard-working employees are harder and harder to find, which is why High-quality young people, such as Tri Star CBI students are more in demand than ever.

Students learned about the types of workers that Reynolds is looking for, the types of positions and shifts that are currently available and projected for the future, and how to apply to the company. Reynolds stressed that they have a need for both high school educated and college-educated workers.

Dennis Hirt has been a speaker and supporter of Celina Tri Star CBI students for the last five years. 

He's retiring in February of 2018 and will be missed!

CBI Student Julie Owens is an Entrepreneur

Julie Owens, CBI High School Student Entrepreneur

Tri Star CBI student Julie Owens is a shining example of a student-entrepreneur. Julie is the owner and operator of Julie Ann’s Sweets ‘N Treats, a new baking business in Celina. 

This young business entrepreneur specializes in cupcakes, birthday cakes, cookies, and much more. Julie was recently hired to bake 600 cookies for Celina High School’s Fall Homecoming, and her motivation is evidenced by her strong work ethic. 

Julie owns a successful baking business and works as a supervisor at CVS Pharmacy in Celina, while maintaining high grades as a Celina High School senior. Julie receives accolades from her customers, bosses, and teachers.

After completing her high school career, Julie would like to operate Julie Ann’s Sweets ‘N Treats full time at her own bakery. We at Tri Star are very proud of Julie and her incredible work ethic.

JR Manufacturing Visits Celina CBI Students

Don Holtvoigt from JR Manufacturing Speaks to CBI Students

Tri Star Career Compact CBI classes once again would like to thank Human Resources Director Don Holtvoigt from JR Manufacturing in Fort Recovery. 

Mr. Holtivoigt did an outstanding job talking to students about opportunities at JR Manufacturing and also about job analysis, salary, benefits, promotions and work characteristics! He passed on a lot of great information for young people about to go to college and/or join the workforce!

CBI Mock Interviews Sharpen Skills

It's "Interview Week" in the Tri Star CBI - Celina class! 

Students were required to dress for success as well as complete practice questions with their peers!! They look great and did a fantastic job!!

Students took turns interviewing each other and answering interview questions. Eye contact, voice, tone, and soft skills were as much the focus as professional attitudes and quality answers.

Auglaize Mercer Business and Education Alliance Visits CBI Classroom

Tri Star Career Compact CBI classes would like to thank Shelly Busse, Executive Director of the Auglaize Mercer Business and Education Alliance for coming in to speak to students about the Talent Connection Forum held in the spring.

Crown Representatives Make Presentation to CBI Students

Tri Star’s CBI classes would like to thank Crown Human Resources Director, Rebecca Ungruhn, and Corporate Recruiter, Curt Cramer for visiting their class and discussing the many employment opportunities that are available at Crown as well as providing tips for students seeking employment.

Ungruhn addressed interviewing techniques and gave a profile of a Crown employee. While Cramer emphasized the importance of “soft skills” such as people skills, social skills, interpersonal skills, and employability skills.

Ferguson Corporation Celebrates Partnership Between CBI Tri Star and Ferguson

What does an outstanding partner in education look like?
Just ask any associate at the Celina, OH Distribution Center (2911), as the location was recently honored by Tri Star Career Compact for its partnership and commitment to educating and hiring tomorrow's workforce.

The center participates in the school's Career Based Intervention program, designed as a work-study program to encourage students to explore various career paths, both in the classroom and in the field. The work experience component offers students the ability to attend school for half a day and work the other half.

"We work with the students to help teach job skills, and from time to time we meet with the kids to practice their interviewing skills and answer their questions about the business," explained Kevin Workman, Celina's HR Manager. "We have hired a few students; in fact one is working part time in our UPS processing area now and will move to full time when he graduates."

In addition to on-the-job training, CBI introduces students to many career themes and topics, some of which include:

• Exploring careers and developing a career path
• Entrepreneurship
• Workplace ethics
• Consumer rights and responsibilities
• Interpersonal relationships at work
• Teamwork and leadership
• Money management
• Financial security

"CBI is important to the success of our workforce and future. Selfishly, we need employable people in our candidate pool, but more importantly, kids need to obtain life skills and job skills by the time they graduate from high school," Kevin added. "We are proud to be a part of this program and honored that we were recognized for our contribution."

Tri Star Career Compact Partnership Banners

Many businesses throughout Mercer and Auglaize Counties are participating in the Tri Star Banner Program. The signs pictured below have been developed by local businesses and are on display in Tri Star classrooms in Celina, St. Marys, and Coldwater. The banners represent the connection and commitment between the local businesses and Tri Star Career Compact.

Tri Star and local area companies are working together to educate and provide quality training to the next generation of workers. Students benefit from the coordinated efforts and are motivated to pursue further education, training, and careers in local companies.

Screen Printing Business Opened by CBI Tri Star Entrepreneur

Main Direction, a screen printing specialty business, is thriving under entrepreneur Haley McGillvary's expertise.

Main Direction, 123 South Main Street, Celina, Ohio

Haley participated in CBI Tri Star as a high school student, allowing her the opportunity to gain valuable career skills in the screen printing business.

Since day 1, Haley has been extremely busy filling orders for customers and expanding her business.

Main Direction opened its doors in July 2017 and has been busy ever since. The new shop specializes in screen printing t-shirts, sweatshirts, jackets, blankets, and more.

CBI Tri Star is very proud of Haley's entrepreneurial spirit, hard work, and business savvy! We wish her the very best success with her new business, Main Direction!

Guest Speaker from Stammen Insurance Co.

Tri Star Career Based Intervention would like to thank Mr. Bill Stammen of Stammen Insurance for stopping by and discussing insurance concepts with CBI students. 

Stammen Insurance has been in Mercer County since 1919. Mr. Stammen talked about personal, business, life and health insurance and majority of time spent on money saving tips. 

Mr. Stammen is a great supporter of Tri Star and we thank him for taking time to speak to the CBI students!

Welding Certification Attained by CBI Student

Congratulations to Tri Star CBI student Clay Parker for recently completing a 90 hour welding course at Tri Star through West Central Ohio Workforce Development Initiative. 

Clay is a senior at Celina High School.

Ohio Dept. of Natural Resources Park Manager Speaks to CBI Students

Tri Star CBI classes would like to thank Ohio Department of Natural Resources Park Manager Mr. David Faler for coming in today to discuss how to become a park ranger.

Also discussed were appropriate skills and responsibilities that a park ranger has each day. Students asked many questions about Grand Lake St. Marys, water levels, fish in the lake and what's being done to clean the lake.

ODOT Visits CBI Class

Celina Tri Star CBI students heard first hand about many opportunities that exist at the Ohio Department of Transportation. 

Tri Star would like to thank Jane Meier, Louis Mertz and Joel Etgen all employees of ODOT for speaking to our CBI students and explaining what they do and many careers that are available. 

Today's students have many career opportunities that don't require a four year degree! Parents, please do your homework and research!!

Tyler Ross, Entrepreneur with Hometown Co.

Tri Star Career Compact CBI student Tyler Ross, a Celina High School student, has been learning about entrepreneurship and small business start up this year and putting it to good use with first hand experience. 

Tyler is working with his parents in developing a screen print & apparel business called Hometown Co. 

They are currently in the startup phase and Tyler has been able to help with preparation and installation of equipment. 

He also helps with preparing screens and printing shirts, but has recently started exploring the design process. 

This has been a great learning experience for Tyler in entrepreneurship and small business leadership as he studies this in CBI.
